Blunt-Nosed Viper
Vipera Lebetina
- There are eight species of snake to be found in Cyprus, three of which are venomous but only one is dangerous to man: the Vipera lebetina or Blunt Nosed Viper.
Appearance
- Body colouration ranges from a pale, ivory white through to a dark grey, and the skin is patterned by transverse rows of blotchy dark stripes.
- Average length: 60 – 70 cm but will occasionally reach lengths of up to 90 to 110 cm.
- This snake belongs to the large true vipers of the Viperidae family which typically have broad triangular-shaped heads and heavy bodies.
- They have long hinged fangs through which they inject venom into their victims.
Lifecycle
- The female reproductive cycle occurs every second year, with mating activity concentrated around mid-May, although it may extend to mid-August.
- 10 to 12 eggs are laid per clutch.
Habits
- Prefers regions of dry, stony or rocky terrain, often on valley slopes, with small and large bushes, drained river valleys and brooks.
- Nocturnal from early summer until mid-September, and more daylight active during the rest of the year.
- Juveniles feed mainly on lizards and adults more on birds.
- Predominantly ground-dwelling, this snake will climb trees to ambush birds.
- Hunting takes place near water pools during spring and in trees during autumn, following the migratory cycle and changing habitats used by the birds throughout the year.
Snake Bites
- A highly venomous snake.
- It attacks only in defence. If it is disturbed, it hisses loudly and may attack very rapidly.
- When this snake bites, its teeth remain embedded in the tissue and the movements of the jaw pump large amounts of very potent poison into the wound.
- If you get bitten by this snake, you must get medical attention immediately.
